Selling Germany: Design as Propaganda

The cult of German design, encompassing the Volkswagen Beetle, Braun, the Ulm School and more, tells of industrial strength driven by the functionalist legacy of the Bauhaus. But is this traditional narrative anything more than Cold War propaganda? A trip to an exhibition in Doha, curated by Martin Roth, got me wondering in this Icon cover story why design shows are so scared of addressing wider social, economic and political contexts.
